Petition  A Better Disaster Relief for Poor Haitians

To President Obama:

SAVE THE POOR VICTIMS OF HAITI'S EARTHQUAKE.

Support: Sustainable Safety Response - SSR: A better proposal

400,000 poor people are trapped in the inner city slums of Port-Au-Prince after the terrible earthquake hit on Tuesday Jan. 12, 2010.  A lack of planning for rescue services is leading to a human catastrophe when civil unrest builds to a fever pitch for lack of basic services, water-food-protection.

Instead of leaving these victims to languish and die from lack of attention they could be evacuated to a safe, clean environment outside the city.  Decent camps with adequate shelter, food, water, medical care and mandatory education programs for children.  Instead of leaving these people at the mercy of the violent elements in their midst to rob and kill and create more unrest, these people would find a peaceful break and a chance to join in a renewal of the Haitian socio-economic structures for a new Haiti.

Please support SSR by instructing all US departments assigned to Haiti to enact this program in collaboration with all international agencies and the Haitian government

     Thanks!

Dear Friends of the Haitian victims and their families,

Conditions since we posted this petition have borne out our vision that planning for resettlement should have been available before day 1.

Now we are seeing stories that the government is going to move 400,000 people out of the capital.  Our information is that again this normal reaction to flee a worsening situation is still not being met with adequate services.  We also want to adjust the thrust of our wording that spoke of violence.  The mainstream media have, as always, played on this theme.  We are there as well and we know the peacefulness of the Haitian people.  We also know that violence is also used as a political tool.

The masses of innocent victims need to be taken out of those circumstances.  They need a resettlement plan like SSR that will give them a genuine Haitian vision of cooperative living, education for their children.

I would hope that this might happen in the natural course of events, but no reason we can't encourage the process-

This petition is very sensible. If we have trouble moving food, water and essentials to the people, then let's move the people to safe areas and assist them there.

Community groups already active IN HAITI can offer effective, immediate solutions. They MUST be consulted.
